DOI: 10.1177/1524839904270389 © 2005 Society for Public Health Education Public Health Informatics: The Nature of the Field and Its Relevance to Health Promotion PracticeDepartment of Biomedical Informatics and Sociomedical Sciences at the Mailman School of Public Health at Columbia University in New York, New York The purpose of this article is to introduce the relatively new field of public health informatics and provide examples of how informatics is currently being applied to health promotion activities. Additionally, the article illustrates how informatics is well positioned to play a central role and is likely to be central to disease prevention, health education, and health promotion as it will be practiced in the future.
